Plant-based proteins for Europe
Protealis is an innovative company that promotes the cultivation of sustainable plant-based proteins in Europe. Combining innovation in breeding and nitrogen fixation new opportunities are created for European farmers to overcome the European protein shortage and provide local sourcing options to the growing number of producers of meat and dairy alternatives. The first focus is on developing soybean varieties with a high yield and a high protein content that are adapted to the local (more northern) conditions.
Towards a sustainable agriculture
The local cultivation of plant-based proteins reduces the pressure on deforestation and avoids transport over long distances. Legume protein crops moreover have the unique ability to fertilize themselves in symbiosis with soil bacteria. This way, legumes are an excellent source of protein and can be grown sustainably because they do not need nitrogen fertilization. They also improve soil health and are therefore excellent for crop rotation with cereal crops.
